The Siemens story started in the small workshop of Werner von Siemens back in 1847. From this inauspicious beginning, today, Siemens spans the globe in 5 continents and 190 countries with a workforce of 500,000.
Siemens VDO – a world-leading supplier of automotive electronics – started its activity in Timisoara in 2000. At this location the main activity field is software applications development for the automotive industry. Timisoara was chosen as a location for Siemens VDO Automotive for various reasons. It has good faculties that train skilled software specialists in English. It has also a good geographical position – an easy access to the city of Timisoara is guaranteed by the international airport. Timisoara is also known for the open-mindness of its people – for this reason, it has always been considered as Romanian‘s door to the West.
The achievements of the last six years of the location’s activity have overcome all expectations, regarding not only the growth of the employees in number, but also the office space, which is still in the process of increasing. The project started with 10 people, now reaching a number of over 1,500 employees, working in every field that Siemens VDO offers. At the beginning of the project the location was focused to the development of software and electronics for carbody, powertrain, safety and chassis applications. Later on other activities were started in Timisoara: mechanical Design, IT remote support, commercial support and hardware engineering.
The Siemens VDO Romania works for several internal customers within the company, mainly from Regensburg, Toulouse, Vienna and Detroit.
Statistics show that 75% of our employees are young university graduates from various universities. Most come from Timisoara, but also from other universities like those from Iasi, Cluj, Brasov, Sibiu. The average age in the company is 30. After employment they are trained by German and French specialists. The company has a tight cooperation relationship with the „Politehnica“ University of Timisoara and the Technical University of Iasi, which are the main source for Siemens employee recruiting. Together we have promoted joined projects like Summer Practice programs, Diploma Projects, Private Scholarships and more.
2006 changed the face of Siemens VDO Romania by adding 2 new locations: R&D location Iasi and the production plant in Timisoara.
